Scratch Resistant Flooring: How It Is Actually Measured

Three numbers, three different things

“Scratch resistant” is a marketing phrase. Underneath it sit three actual measurements, and they are not comparable with each other. Knowing which applies to which material is most of what you need.

Wear layer, in mils — vinyl plank

The clear film over the printed pattern on a vinyl plank, measured in thousandths of an inch. It is the only part traffic touches.

  • 12 mil — builder grade
  • 20 mil — the residential benchmark
  • 30 mil — light commercial

This measures abrasion: how long before the print wears through. It is a good predictor of service life and a poor predictor of whether a dog’s claw will leave a mark today. Those are different events.

Note also that wear layer and total plank thickness are unrelated numbers. A 5mm plank at 20 mil outlasts an 8mm plank at 12 mil.

AC rating — laminate

An abrasion class from tested performance, not a manufacturer claim.

  • AC3 — light residential
  • AC4 — general residential and light commercial, the sensible default
  • AC5 — commercial

Laminate’s wear surface is melamine impregnated with aluminium oxide, which is genuinely hard — considerably harder than a vinyl wear layer or a wood finish. This is why laminate wins outright on scratch resistance and loses outright on water.

Janka — solid and engineered wood

A steel ball pressed into a timber sample until it embeds to half its diameter. It measures denting, not scratching.

This is the most commonly misread number in flooring. A scratch on a wood floor happens in the finish, which sits on top of the timber and has nothing to do with the species. A very hard hickory under a soft oil-modified finish will show scratches more readily than a softer white oak under a good two-component waterborne.

Janka tells you what happens when someone drops a cast iron pan. The finish tells you what happens when a chair moves.

What none of them measure

How visible a scratch is. This is the thing that actually determines whether you are happy with a floor in two years, and no rating covers it.

A scratch shows because it catches light differently from the surface around it. So:

  • High gloss shows everything. Matte and low-sheen hide a great deal.
  • Dark floors show light scratches. A scratch in a dark stain exposes pale wood or a pale core, and the contrast is brutal. Mid-tone floors are the most forgiving.
  • Texture hides. Embossed, wire-brushed and hand-scraped surfaces break up reflections, so a mark disappears into the existing variation.
  • Bevels help. A plank with real bevelled edges has visual interest that absorbs incidental marking.

A textured, matte, mid-tone floor with a modest specification will look better after three years than a glossy dark floor with a superb one. That is not an argument against buying quality — it is an argument for buying the right finish and colour alongside it.

Where scratches actually happen

Not evenly. Almost always in four places:

Entry points, from grit tracked in on shoes. Grit is the real abrasive in a house — most floor wear is quartz dust being ground underfoot, not dramatic events. A doormat at every external door does more measurable good than upgrading a wear layer.

Chair zones, at the dining table and at desks. Felt pads, replaced when they wear, prevent nearly all of it.

Circulation turns, where a dog changes direction.

Under and around anything heavy that gets moved: a kitchen island bar stool, a sofa, a bed.

If you want a floor that stays looking new, address those four and buy a mid-grade product. The reverse — buying the top specification and skipping the doormats — reliably disappoints.

Practically, for a Central Texas house

The grit here is limestone dust and caliche fines, and in the newer subdivisions where construction is still active there is a lot of it. Entry matting matters more in a two-year-old Leander or Liberty Hill house than it would in an established neighbourhood, because the source is next door.

For most houses in this corridor: a 20 mil rigid-core plank in a matte, textured, mid-tone finish, with real bevels. It rates well, it hides marks, and it is the floor that still looks acceptable when you sell.

Which is more scratch resistant, laminate or vinyl plank?

Laminate, by a clear margin. Its wear surface is an aluminium-oxide-impregnated melamine layer that is genuinely hard, which is what the AC rating measures. Vinyl's wear layer is a clear urethane-coated film — more forgiving, more flexible, and softer. Vinyl wins on water and laminate wins on scratches, and that trade-off is the whole decision between them.

Does a high Janka number mean a hardwood floor will not scratch?

No, and this is the most common misreading in flooring. Janka measures the timber's resistance to denting — a steel ball pressed into the wood. Scratches happen in the finish, which sits on top and has nothing to do with the species. A very hard hickory with a soft finish scratches more visibly than a softer oak with a good two-component finish.

Do scratch-resistant coatings actually work?

Aluminium oxide in a laminate wear layer genuinely works and is why AC ratings are what they are. Aftermarket topical treatments sold to add scratch resistance to an existing floor are far less convincing, and some interfere with recoating later. If a floor needs more protection than it has, the honest answer is usually a different finish system rather than a bottle.

Why do scratches show on some floors and not others?

Contrast and sheen. A scratch is visible because it reflects light differently from the surface around it — so a high-gloss dark floor shows everything and a matte, mid-tone, textured floor hides a great deal. Two floors with identical measured scratch resistance can look completely different after a year, purely because of finish and colour.
