Which Direction to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring

The four inputs
Plank direction feels like an aesthetic decision made at the last minute. It is actually four decisions that usually agree, and occasionally do not.
Light
Raking light across a floor highlights every seam. A plank run toward the main light source — so the seams run away from the window rather than across the light — reads as a continuous surface. Run across the light and every joint casts a small shadow line.
In a room with strong directional daylight, this is the most visible of the four.
Sightlines and room shape
Planks running along the length of a room make it read longer. Running across make it read wider. In a hallway, running along the length is almost always correct — cross-laying a corridor produces a ladder effect that is very hard to like.
Running along the longest dimension also usually means fewer cuts, which saves material and labour.
The subfloor
Over a concrete slab — which is nearly every house in this corridor — this input disappears entirely. A floating floor is a continuous sheet resting on the slab, and direction has no structural consequence.
Over a wood subfloor, in the older Austin and Georgetown stock or on a second storey, running perpendicular to the joists is the traditional rule. It spreads load across more joists and it means the floor is not following any deflection between them. Over modern properly sheathed subfloors this matters less than it once did, but it is still the safe default.
Run length
The one people forget. Most manufacturers cap a continuous run — commonly around forty feet — before a transition is required, because a floating floor’s cumulative expansion across a long span exceeds what the perimeter gap can absorb.
In an open-plan house, running the plank along the longest axis can push you over that limit and force a transition strip in the middle of the main living space. Running the shorter way sometimes avoids it entirely.
Work this out before you commit, not when you reach the far wall.
What to do when they conflict
In most modern open-plan houses here — which is most of Leander, Cedar Park and Liberty Hill — run the plank along the longest sightline from the front door, unless that breaks the run-length limit. That is the axis a visitor’s eye follows, and continuity along it is what makes an open floor read as one space.
In a room with one dominant window, follow the light.
In a hallway, follow the hallway. Always.
In a house with distinct compartmented rooms, each room can take its own direction with a transition at the doorway, and it will look intentional.
The open-plan rule
If you take one thing: in an open plan, pick one direction and run it everywhere.
Changing direction between zones draws a hard line across a space that was designed not to have one. It almost never looks deliberate, and it is the most common regret we hear about after a job someone laid themselves.
Transitions between an open living area and a bedroom wing are different — a doorway is a natural break and a change there is fine.
Diagonal and herringbone
Both work and both cost more.
A diagonal lay raises the waste factor noticeably — you are cutting an angle on every perimeter board — and it slows the install. It reads well in a square room and it can make a narrow room look wider.
Herringbone is a different job again: more labour, considerably more waste, and it requires a product rated for it. Not every click profile can be assembled in a herringbone geometry, and forcing one that cannot is how a floor comes apart.
Confirm the rating before you buy the material, not after.
One practical note
Whatever direction you choose, dry-lay the first few rows and check where the last board lands at the far wall. If it comes out as a two-inch sliver, shift the starting row so the first and last courses are more even. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a floor that looks planned and one that looks like it ran out.
